Harriet Hu
2010-11 Recognition Awardee
Preserving Chinatown’s Culture
Harriet is a 17-year-old young woman graduate of George Washington High in San Francisco. She plans to attend either UC Berkeley or UCSD and pursue a degree in Bio Engineering.
Harriet performed 570 hours in service, notably with an organization called “Adopt An Alley (‘AAA’)”. AAA is a youth-powered service group that promotes environmental cleanliness and cross-generational connections. Harriet was especially drawn to AAA’s work to assist Chinatown’s senior population.
In this work with Chinatown’s seniors, Harriet shares: “I experienced the vibrancy of a community that I never would have known without AAA. I was saddened to realize that the culture did not resonate among the Chinatown youth”. “In order to help preserve the culture, I organized a district-wide youth summit”.
“Harriet is outspoken, opinionated, and incredibly articulate. She recruited over 200 volunteers and was able to communicate the mission and her passion for the project. She consistently challenges herself and her peers to gain new experiences”, says Angelina Yu, Senior Community Organizer of the Chinatown Community Development Center.
Please join us in congratulating this cultural champion, Harriet Hu, in her receipt of a 2010-11 Stephanie Brown Cadet Memorial Foundation Recognition Award.
