Shu Sarah Chang
2010-11 Recognition Awardee
Empathy into Action
Clocking in well over a 1000 hours in volunteer time during her high school career, Sarah, an 18 year old student is poised to attend Stanford University in the autumn, after having successfully graduated from Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California.
Sarah, having grown up in a dormitory for steel factory worker families in Chengdu, China, immigrated to the US with unfortunate memories of domestic violence emblazoned on her mind.
Channeling her empathy, Sarah sprang into action after having seen a PBS documentary on Sex trafficking in Southeast Asia. She founded “Mission Outreach”, a club dedicated to fighting poverty and human trafficking.
“When I was a young child, I was powerless to protect the people I love from destitution and abuse. This gave me a strong sense of empathy for others whose dignity has been violated”, says Sarah.
“Sarah’s greatest strength is the willingness to jump right in and get whatever needs doing done”, adds Monda Wiseman, Manager at the American Cancer Society of Pleasanton, where Sarah dedicated many hours.
Sarah, we are glad that you are getting this vital work done. Please join us in congratulating 2010-11 Stephanie Brown Cadet Memorial Recognition Award winner Sarah Chang.
